Kalgan Ladies Club Visit

On September 10th Glenys and Corgi, Manhon visited the Kalgan Ladies Club in Albany to talk about the SES Canine Section. Manhon charmed everyone and Glenys had them laughing with funny anecdotes. The women said it was an informative and entertaining talk. The Kalgan Ladies Club raises money for local charities.

Canine Section Updates

Friday 30th September- area search teams Leonie and Jemma and; Chris and Piper were called out to a search in Caversham. The missing person was found by WA Police shortly after the teams had commenced search of their assigned areas. A great outcome.

Area search team Leonie and border collie Jemma, visited the year 6 Community Service Club at Perth College. They were a wonderful group of girls, very interested in what the Canine Section does. 

Wednesday 4th September- Leonie and Jemma; Brian and Steph conducted a presentation at the Perth Bush Walkers Club about the Canine Section. Leonie and Steph spoke about the role of the SES Canine Section in searches, how we train our dogs, what type of dogs we use, our commitment to the Section and more information on what it takes to join. We also talked about our experiences on recent searches. Following the presentation, David Osborne, club President said, "It was a real privilege for our  Club  to have Leonie, Stephanie, Ian & yourself (Brian) give up your evening to provide us with such an insight into your section’s activities and your good work for the community. It’s was really nice to see people so engaged and enjoying what they do.  Training and working with smart, happy dogs like Jemma must be very satisfying. From members’ questions, the presentation clearly generated a lot of interest." We thank the members of the Perth Bush Walkers Club for taking the time to hear us.

On Friday 6th September, Ashleigh, Leonie and Jemma attended the SES Cadets City Muster at Kingsway College. They gave area search dog demonstrations to about 150 cadets. Leonie and Ash were impressed by the enthusiasm and interest of the cadets. 

All in all a busy past few weeks! 

Upcoming events:

Sunday 15th September- the Canine Section will be out in our orange at the Whiteman Park 'Doggies Day Out', following our training in the morning.

20th- 22nd September-The Annual Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) Conference: Leonie, Chris and Kenneth will be attending.

September 22nd- Members of the Section will be taking part in a navigation course with the Perth Bushwalkers Club.

Area Search teams activated on Sunday

Three Area Search teams from the Canine Section were called to a search on Sunday afternoon for an elderly lady who went missing at midday. Leonie and Jemma, Chris and Piper and Steph and Karma assisted with clearing areas of park and bushland in Perth's northern suburbs. Among those searching were foot  and cycle teams, SES volunteers from Wanneroo/Joondalup. At 7pm the missing person was found well and safe- a great outcome for all involved.

2013 RSPCA Million Paws Walk

What a fantastic day the K9 Section had on the South Perth Foreshore today for the RSPCA Million Paws Walk 2013. The weather was ideal for the 5km walk along Sir James Mitchell Park where hundreds of dogs joined together to support the great work of the RSPCA. The dogs were so excited to make so many new friends! Our Training Manager, Leonie even got an interview with Michael Schultz from Channel 10 News. Looking forward to seeing you and your pooches there next year!

Requesting new training areas

The SES Canine Section is currently seeking more areas to train in.  It is important for the dogs and handlers to train on a variety of different terrains and locations. We are looking for large open bushland areas and large paddocks or grassy areas, both flat and hilly preferably over 1km².

As with all SES members we are covered by insurance, our dogs are under control at all times, safe with wild life and all faeces are removed from the area.

Missing from Bridgetown: Wayne Cornelius Coughlan

Bridgetown Police are seeking information regarding missing 64-year-old man Wayne Cornelius Coughlan, who was last seen in the Bridgetown area.
Mr Coughlan was reported missing to police about 8.15pm Sunday night after a friend visited his Bridgetown residence and could not find him.

Anyone who sees Mr Coughlan is asked to call police immediately on 131 444.

Operate Communications Systems and Equipment (OCSE, or the “Comms Course”)

Two canine section members attended the Operate Communications Systems and Equipment (OCSE, or the “Comms Course”) on the 16th & 17th March at Bayswater SES Base. By the end of the 'Comms' course Stephanie and new recruit Brian learned about the different types of radio equipment, how they are used, how important radio communication is in SES operations and the basic jargon or 'prowords' used in radio communication. Among the members in attendance were those from Canning South, Stirling, Wanneroo/Joondalup and Kalamunda.

Brian and Stephanie from the Canine Section would like to thank our District Manager 'GMH' (and Kim) for organising the course and preparing delicious snacks and lunches. Also special thanks go to Greg Cook ('Cookie'), Steve Crawford, Elton Vandendungen, Matt Barber and Rob Crawford for giving up their weekends to deliver informative, well thought out lectures and exercises throughout the course. All presenters brought a different approach and a wealth of knowledge to the sessions- it was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
